President Joe Biden will travel to Michigan on Tuesday to support striking United Auto Workers union members, according to people familiar with the matter, in a show of solidarity during tense contract negotiations with Detroit’s Big Three automakers.
The people spoke on condition of anonymity to outline Biden’s travel plans before they were announced. The trip marks a significant thaw for the president and the nation’s largest auto worker union ahead of the 2024 election, when Biden is counting on labor support to help propel him to victory. And it comes as former President Donald Trump is planning to visit Detroit on Sept. 27 — the day of the second Republican primary debate — to court labor members.
