Hilary Duff has revealed that she often follows Gwyneth Paltrow’s controversial coffee-only diet in the morning. The 35-year-old actor recently appeared on the Lipstick on the Rim podcast, where she spoke about her beauty secrets and makeup regimen. While sharing details about her daily routine, the Lizzie McGuire star admitted that she tends to follow Goop founder’s morning ritual. “I wake up really hungry,” Duff told podcast host Molly Sims on Tuesday 9 May. “Sometimes I try to – you know, Gwyneth’s in trouble for saying this – but sometimes I try to just drink coffee in the morning and starve off my hunger.” The 50-year-old lifestyle guru recently turned heads when she detailed her wellness routine, which included drinking coffee or “celery juice with lemon or lemon water” in the mornings so that she won’t “spike [her] blood sugar”. Paltrow recently sparked backlash when she described her daily eating habits during a March episode of The Art of Being Well with Dr Will Cole podcast. The Oscar winner began by explaining that she usually eats dinner “early in the evening” so that she’s “really done eating by 7pm.” “And then I do a nice intermittent fast until I usually eat something at about 12pm,” Paltrow continued. Then, she tends to have coffee, or “celery juice with lemon or lemon water” in the mornings, as she doesn’t want something that will “spike [her] blood sugar” before exercising with one hour of pilates or walking. Her afternoon meals consist of “bone broth for lunch a lot of the days,” while she eats “according to paleo” for dinner. Paltrow’s daily routine sparked considerable criticism, as many dieticians claimed it resembled disordered eating habits. It really just works for me, and it’s been very powerful and very positive.” Paltrow also informed critics that the foods she mentioned on the podcast are not what she eats every day, adding: “And by the way, I eat far more than bone broth and vegetables. I eat full meals, and I also have a lot of days of eating whatever I want. And eating, you know, French fries and whatever.” Despite sometimes following Paltrow’s morning routine, Duff admitted on the Lipstick on the Rim podcast that she still eats “lots of calories” when packing school lunch for her three children. The former child star shares daughters Banks, four, and Mae, two with husband Matthew Koma. She also shares 11-year-old son Luca with ex-husband Mike Comrie. “If we’re being honest, yeah, I eat a chicken nugget in the morning while I’m packing lunches and there’s one left over,” she confessed. “Pop it down the hatch!” In addition to the occasional chicken nugget, some of the How I Met Your Father star’s favourite foods included “cauliflower rounds” in the air fryer, topped with an avocado, fried egg, or vegan sausage. Hitting snooze button can actually benefit brain sometimes, study suggests
Hitting the snooze button on the alarm clock once in a while might actually support the brain’s process of waking from deep sleep, according to a new study. People sometimes want to go right back to sleep even after the alarm goes off in the morning, using the snooze button in clocks and cell phones. Decades of previous research suggested that hitting snooze can have negative effects, both on sleep and the brain’s ability to wake up, but until now there hasn’t been any direct evidence of this, say scientists. The new study, published in the Journal of Sleep Research, assessed how common snoozing is and what effects this behaviour has on sleep, sleepiness, mood, and the brain’s cognitive abilities. Researchers found that those who snooze on an average sleep slightly shorter and feel more drowsy in the morning compared to those who never snooze. But they also saw that there were no negative effects of snoozing on the release of the stress hormone cortisol, mood, or sleep quality throughout the night. In the study, 1732 individuals answered questions about their morning habits, including how often they hit the snooze button with many – especially young adults – reporting that they use the alarm feature regularly. The most common reason for snoozing, according to participants, is feeling too tired to get out of bed when the alarm goes off. In another small follow-up experiment, 31 regular snoozers spent two nights in a sleep lab in order to measure their sleep in more detail. On one of the mornings, they were allowed to snooze for 30 minutes, and on the other, they had to get up right when the alarm went off. While in the first case, participants’ sleep was disturbed during the half hour of snoozing, most of them still got more than 20 minutes of sleep – meaning that their total night’s sleep was not affected much. In the snooze condition, no one had to wake up suddenly from deep sleep, and the snoozers performed a bit better on cognitive tests right upon waking. There were also no clear effects of snoozing on mood, sleepiness, or the amount of cortisol in the saliva. The results hint that half an hour of snoozing may not have negative effects on night sleep and could have some positive effects like a decreased likelihood of waking from deep sleep. However, researchers caution that the second experiment was small and only included people who are regular snoozers who find it easy to go back to sleep after each alarm. They say snoozing is most likely not for everyone. Jennifer Kanaan from the University of Connecticut in the US, who is another sleep scientist unrelated to the study, said the latest findings should be interpreted with caution as it could send the wrong message to people. “If you’re coming in and out of sleep for 30 minutes, after the alarm goes off the first time, you’re costing yourself 30 minutes of uninterrupted, quality, restorative sleep,” Dr Kanaan said in a statement. Instead of trying to figure out how to manipulate our alarm clocks, she says people should make a consistent good night’s sleep a greater priority and be less reliant on snooze buttons. “Simply put, instead of hitting the snooze button they should get more sleep,” Dr Kanaan said. F1 driver Lando Norris outlined his concerns about some potential issues with the Las Vegas Grand Prix circuit ahead of the race mere minutes before his heavy crash on Sunday. In a grid walk interview with Sky Sports’ Martin Brundle, Norris was asked what he thought of the track and how it feels to drive on to which he replied: “Pretty dreadful. “Just because it’s the least high temp we have had all weekend. Just because you’re pushing on an out-lap. Normally you don’t push on an out-lap. “It didn’t feel great, it should come back towards us. The track should improve a lot throughout the race, it’s a lot more windy and I’m at the back of the grid. “There’s a lot of things going against it but it should be a good race.” Norris, who started 15th on the grid after a disappointing qualifying, lost control of his car on turn 12 and spun into the wall with sparks flying from his rear end. The Brit steered right, lost a tyre in the impact with the wall and ended up in the barriers over to the side of the track. Norris managed to let his engineer know that he was okay before the safety car was deployed. The McLaren driver was then transferred to the circuit medical centre, before being taken to the university medical centre for further precautionary investigations. Max Verstappen went on to claim victory in an entertaining first-ever race on the strip in Sin City beating Charles Leclerc who had started the race on pole. Sergio Perez looked to have sealed a P2 for Red Bull before Leclerc overtook him on the final lap. It was the second race in a row that Perez has dropped a position on the final lap, after Fernando Alonso denied him a podium last time out in Brazil. Norris’ team-mate, Oscar Piastri, secured one world championship point with a P10 finish.
