
Thousands of crude 'penis fish' wash up on beach giving locals the willies
Thousands of 'Penis Fish' have been found on a beach… giving locals the willies. The rude-looking marine creatures appeared after a heavy storm. The pink wrigglers were about 10 inches in length. They freaked out locals in Río Grande, southern Argentina, on the afternoon of 17 July. The species are called Urechis Unicinctus, but they are also dubbed the 'Penis Fish' due to their phallic appearance. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Despite their nickname, the creatures are actually a type of spoonworm. Their other nickname is 'The Fat Innkeeper Worm'. They create U-shaped burrows in sand or mud that are then left for other animals to move into, hence the use of ‘innkeeper’ in its moniker. They are eaten by sharks and seagulls. They usually live underground but are brought to the surface during strong storms, leaving them exposed to predators. Evidence of their U-shaped burrows dates back over 300 million years. The worms, which can live up to 25 years, are a common delicacy in countries such as South Korea, Japan and China where they are eaten raw or cooked in a variety of different styles. They are said to have a chewy texture and are surprisingly sweet, often served with a savoury sauce made from sesame oil or vinegar with gochujang. Have your say in our news democracy. Nearly 1.5m 18 and under referred for mental health support in 2022 – charity
Almost 1.5 million people aged 18 and under were referred for mental health support in 2022, according to a youth mental health charity. According to YoungMinds’ analysis of data from NHS Digital, there were 1,425,193 referrals last year, a rise of 76% since 2019. The charity also said it is the second consecutive year that referrals have topped one million. Laura Bunt, chief executive of YoungMinds, said: “Every day without action is another day thousands of young people are without the mental health support they need. Behind every number is a young person facing impossible challenges.” In April 2022, the Government made a call for evidence for a new 10-year mental health plan. Any new plan for the NHS workforce needs to include significant measures to increase the numbers of mental health specialists we have working in children and young people's mental health services Tom Madders, YoungMinds As part of the call, 13,887 people under the age of 25 completed a YoungMinds survey and the answers were shared anonymously with the Government. Ms Blunt said those who responded made it “loud and clear what change was needed”. However, the plan was shelved in favour of the Major Conditions Strategy, which grouped mental illness together with the likes of cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. The call for evidence for the new strategy ends on Tuesday. In response, YoungMinds and a group of young people will take two vans to Westminster displaying messages from some of the people who responded to the initial call over the 10-year mental health plan. Ms Blunt added: “Twelve months on, as the situation worsens, we are still waiting. The Government had an opportunity to hear from young people and take action that could transform the system, but all we’ve seen is delay. “The Government must listen to young people and commit to action that drives down numbers of young people needing support, prioritises early intervention, and properly funds mental health services.” Tom Madders, director of communications and campaigns at YoungMinds, said: “This explosion in referral numbers has led to wait times being as long as two years in parts of the country. “One of the biggest barriers for getting wait times down is the lack of staff and young people are paying the price for a total absence of workforce planning over the past few years.” On Sunday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the NHS Workforce Plan, a 15-year blueprint outlining how the NHS will retain and recruit staff, will be published this week. Gemma Collins blasted for promoting headset as ‘magic’ cure for depression
Gemma Collins has been criticised by her followers for using misleading wording in an advert for a “medication free” headset, which is apparently used to treat depression. The TV star and presenter, 42, who is best known for appearing in realty series The Only Way Is Essex, shared a video of her wearing the Flow Neuroscience Headset, telling her followers that she had been using the product for one week and was already feeling “lighter” and “brighter”. In the caption she wrote: “According to Flow’s data it reduces depression in 88 per cent of people. And the NHS are trialling it too.” She finished the caption with “#ad” to indicate that she was asked to promote the product. The Independent has contacted Collins’ representatives about the terms of the advert. In the video, Collins told the camera the product is “literally amazing”. “I am loving life now off of my depression tablets. This has been a real game changer for me,” she said. According to Flow, the headset sends a “small electrical current” to “the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex”, which causes “neurons to fire more frequently, strengthening the neural pathways in the prefrontal cortex”. Collins continued: “Flow is a new medically approved depression treatment. It focuses on the front cortex of your brain. This ultimately helps you to relax and it also helps to remove negative depressive symptoms.” “For people that can’t get access to therapy, or don’t want to be on antidepressants, they have a new option which is Flow.” “Flow actually works faster and better than antidepressants,” she claimed in the video. “It’s like having your own therapist in the comfort your own home and you’re fully in control of your own treatment.” She concluded that using Flow would be “the best thing you do”. Social media users have been criticising Collins’ messaging in the post, arguing that she is promoting the product as a “quick fix” for depression and encouraging people to stop their medications without first consulting a medical professional. “People PLEASE speak to your medical team before stopping any medications,” one person urged in the comments section. Another pleaded to Collins: “Please don’t promote people just abruptly coming off their medication !!” Others remarked that Collins had not linked to any scientific research to support her claims, or given insight into how the product actually works. A representative for Flow Neuroscience told The Independent that it is “very clear” on its website that anyone with depression should “always speak to their doctor first before trying new treatment”. The statement continued: “At a time when society is attempting to remove the stigma associated with mental health – people like Gemma are helping enormously by being open and transparent about their own mental health journey.” “Gemma has struggled for years on antidepressants, and it’s brilliant that she is now having this positive experience using Flow.” The spokesperson added that Collins’ posts are a “reflection of her own personal experience” and the post had not been “edited or scripted” by Flow. Collins has previously said that the side effects of using antidepressants have not worked for her, which drew her to using the headset. Flow’s spokesperson also said that the company’s mission is trying to “increase accessibility” to mental health treatments. At present, the headset does not require a prescription before use and is available to purchase online. The company says that “83 per cent of its users reported improvement in their symptoms within 21 days” and that less than two per cent of its users on its database reported minor side effects, which are “typically mild irritation of the kind and mild headaches”. School holidays sorted: Fuss-free and nutritious family dinner recipes
We all know how important it is for the whole family to follow a nutritious diet and enjoy tasty meals together, but with the chaos that the school summer holidays bring, that can be no mean feat. And for a healthy twist on the classic chilli, try the chicken and kale chilli. Flavoursome and high in protein, yet low in fat it is also a source of vitamin C and high in vitamin K. Everyone loves a pasta bake! Suitable for vegetarians, the spinach pasta bake is packed full of vegetables and contains 3 of your 5 a day. Or for another injection of spinach, try the cheesy baked eggs, which makes a stunning centrepiece and is also suitable for vegetarians. Both dishes are high in vitamin K and A, and a source of folate. Mexican bean and spinach nacho crumble Cost: £1.25 per portion Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 red onion, chopped 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp chilli powder 400g can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 400g can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 corn on the cob, kernels removed 250g frozen diced butternut squash 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 260g bag spinach 100g tortilla chips, roughly crushed Method: Heat the oil in a large saucepan and fry the onion for 3-4 minutes, add the spices and then add the beans, corn kernels and squash and fry for 1-2 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes, with half a can of water and the ketchup. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the spinach and stir until wilted. Transfer to a heatproof serving dish, sprinkle with crushed tortilla chips and grill for 1-2 minutes. Cooks tip: To cook in a slow cooker, prepare as above, stir in the tomatoes, water and ketchup and bring to the boil. Transfer to the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 hours. Stir in the spinach and finish as above. Pork and kale meatballs with tomato spaghetti Cost: £1.45 per portion Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 30 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 250g bag kale 2 tbsp oil 1 red onion, finely chopped 500g minced pork 1 tsp Italian seasoning 3 tbsp sun dried tomato pesto 250g spaghetti 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tsp balsamic vinegar Method: Cook the kale in boiling water for 3-4 minutes, drain well. Squeeze out the excess moisture from half the kale and finely chop. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 4-5 minutes until golden, transfer half to a large bowl and mix in the pork, chopped kale, Italian seasoning and 1 tbsp pesto, season and mix well. Divide into 16 balls. Set aside the remaining onions. Heat the remaining oi in the same frying pan and fry the meatballs for 10-15 minutes until cooked through Remove and set aside. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti according to pack instructions, drain, reserving a little of the cooking water. Return the reserved onions to the same frying pan, add the chopped tomatoes, vinegar, remaining pesto and kale and bring to the boil, stir in the spaghetti and a little of the cooking water and stir to evenly coat. Season. Serve the tomato spaghetti topped with the meatballs. Cooks tip: Try using minced turkey, chicken, lamb or beef instead of the pork. Chicken and kale chilli Cost: £1.95 per portion Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 30 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 tbsp oil 1 leek, sliced 1 clove garlic, chopped 2 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp ground cumin 500g minced chicken or turkey 2 tbsp tomato puree 400g can chopped tomatoes 400g can black beans, drained and rinsed 250g bag kale 1 ripe avocado, diced Soured cream and cooked rice to serve Method: Heat the oil in a large saucepan and fry the leek and garlic for 1 minute. Add the spices and then the minced chicken and fry until browned. Add the tomato puree, chopped tomatoes along with ½ can of water and the beans. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, cook the kale in boiling water for 3-4 minutes, drain well then stir into the chilli. Season to taste. Serve topped with avocado, a spoonful of soured cream on a bed of rice. Cooks tip: Try minced pork instead and serve on top of jacket potatoes. Spinach and pasta bake Cost: £1.44 per portion Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 20 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 75g cashews 1 carrot, sliced 1 sweet potato, diced 300ml almond milk 50g vegan hard cheese, grated 300g macaroni pasta 260g bag spinach 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 leek, sliced 100g cherry tomatoes, halved 50g homemade breadcrumbs Method: Preheat the oven to 200C, gas mark 6. Cook the cashews, carrot, and sweet potato in boiling water for 10 minutes or until tender. Drain and puree in a food processor with the almond milk until smooth, season and add half the cheese alternative. Cook the macaroni in boiling salted water for 10 minutes, add the spinach until wilted, drain well and return to the pan. Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the leek and tomatoes for 3-4 minutes until softened. Mix the sauce and leek mixture into the pasta and stir to combine. Transfer to an ovenproof serving dish, sprinkle with remaining cheese alternative and breadcrumbs and bake for 20 minutes until golden. Cooks tip: Try new potatoes or butternut squash to replace the sweet potatoes. Cheesy baked eggs Cost: £1.25 per portion Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 2 leeks, trimmed and sliced 2 cloves garlic sliced 10 cherry tomatoes sliced 200g spinach 4 large eggs 100g mature cheddar grated Seasoning to taste Method: Preheat your oven to 180C. Add the oil to a medium pan on a low to medium heat then add in the leeks. Fry for 8-10 minutes until soft and caramelising. Now add the garlic and fry for a further minute. Add the tomatoes and spinach to the pan and cook down for 1-2 minutes. Turn off the heat and season well. Transfer the mix to a medium high sided baking dish. Crack the eggs on top of the veg mix. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top and pop in the oven for 8-10 minutes.
