7 ways you could be damaging your eye health without even realising
7 ways you could be damaging your eye health without even realising
Our eyesight is often something we take for granted – until there’s something wrong with it. Problems like short-sightedness (myopia) are rapidly increasing. In fact, research has predicted that by 2050 there will be 4,758 million people with the condition – nearly half (49.8%) of the world’s population – as experts are highlighting ahead of National Eye Health Week (September 18-24) In addition, new research by Macushield found 73% of Brits notice their eyes deteriorating with age, and the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) World Report on Vision has predicted a dramatic increase in the need for eyecare in the near future, pointing out that at least 2.2 billion people globally have a vision impairment – and around half of these have vision impairment that could have been prevented. “Some people may not be giving their eye health the attention it deserves, occasionally missing out on annual eye tests, which play a crucial role in detecting conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration,” says ophthalmologist Dr Jørn Slot Jørgensen. “When identified and addressed in a timely manner, these issues can be managed effectively, helping safeguard our vision.” Jørgensen says the pandemic also played a role in worsening eye problems, particularly the increase in short-sightedness. “With the shift to remote work, people are now more likely to spend extended hours with their screens for work and leisure,” he says. “Prioritising eye health isn’t just a matter of convenience, it’s a fundamental aspect of our overall wellbeing.” Here Jørgensen, of the Laser Eye Clinic London, and Evelyn (Evie) Mensah, a consultant ophthalmologist and eye surgeon at Central Middlesex Hospital and member of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists council, outline seven ways people may be damaging their vision, without even realising… 1. Skipping eye tests Mensah says it’s advisable for people to have a sight test every two years, or more often if their optometrist recommends it. Jørgensen adds: “Failing to schedule regular eye tests can result in undiagnosed eye conditions. Conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration often develop without noticeable symptoms in their early stages, but early detection through eye tests is crucial for effective treatment and vision preservation.“ Routine eye tests can also pick up early signs of underlying systemic health conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. 2. Prolonged screen time The widespread use of digital devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones has led to extended periods of screen time for both work and leisure, says Jørgensen. “This can result in digital eye strain, characterised by symptoms like dry eyes, headaches and blurred vision,” he explains. “In this age of digital technology, it’s advisable to relieve digital eye strain by using the 20-20-20 rule,” says Mensah – this means every 20 minutes, looking at something 20ft away for 20 seconds. “In addition, remember to blink when using a screen to prevent eyes from getting dry.” 3. Not wearing UV protective sunglasses Jørgensen says failing to wear sunglasses with adequate UV protection can lead to harmful UV radiation exposure, which may contribute to conditions like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). “Protecting your eyes from UV rays, particularly in sunny conditions, is essential for preserving long-term eye health,” he stresses. Mensah says UV exposure can also increase the development of growths on the surface of the eyes called pterygia, and warns: “Not all sunglasses filter UV light, so ensure they carry the CE, UV 400 or British Standard Mark. And never look directly at the sun because this can cause a solar burn in the macula that can result in permanent visual loss.” 4. Poor diet and lack of nutrients Eating a healthy, balanced diet could help reduce your risk of sight-threatening eye disease such as AMD, which impacts central vision. Mensah explains that the macula – part of the retina which processes what you see directly in front of you – contains natural pigments such as lutein and zeaxanthin that are found in dark-green, leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. “Vitamins A, C and E are also helpful, so eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day,” she advises. “And if you have a family history of AMD, ask your GP about taking nutritional supplements.” Jørgensen adds: “A poor diet lacking essential nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, as well as minerals like zinc, can harm eye health, as these nutrients are vital for vision and overall eye function. To maintain healthy eyes, it’s crucial to consume a balanced diet rich in leafy greens, colourful fruits and vegetables, and omega-3 sources.” 5. Smoking If you’re a smoker, stopping is not only beneficial to your general health but also your eyes, says Mensah: “Smoking cessation is a modifiable factor that can reduce the risk of developing certain eye conditions such as AMD and cataracts.” Ask your GP for support if you are keen to quit – there are lots of helpful resources available. 6. Not wearing prescribed glasses Mensah says there’s a widespread misconception that wearing prescribed glasses worsens your eyesight. “This notion is inaccurate,” she stresses. “The primary reason for wearing prescribed glasses is simply because you require them. If you neglect to wear them, you run the risk of experiencing headaches.” 7. Inadequate lighting “Working or reading in areas with insufficient lighting can make your eyes work harder, leading to eye strain, discomfort, and poorer vision,” says Jørgensen. He points out that good lighting, often called ‘task lighting’, is vital for creating comfortable conditions for reading and working. Will Smith says daughter Willow’s ‘mutiny’ changed his view on success
Will Smith says daughter Willow’s ‘mutiny’ changed his view on success
Will Smith says a “mutiny” by his daughter, Willow Smith, is what first caused him to change his perspective of success. The Hollywood actor has been stepping back into the spotlight following his infamous outburst at the 2022 Oscars, where he slapped Chris Rock on stage after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. In an interview with fellow actor and comedian Kevin Hart, on his Peacock show Hart to Hart, Smith spoke about the moment his family rose to fame in 2010. While Smith had enjoyed his own success from 1999 thanks to NBC’s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Willow and his son Jada achieved their own fame in the early Noughties. Musician Willow, 22, released her debut single “Whip My Hair” in 2010, breaking into the UK and US charts when she was just nine years old. Meanwhile Jaden, a rapper and actor, starred opposite Jackie Chan and Taraji P Henson in The Karate Kid that same year, when he was 11. “2010 was like the greatest year as an artist, as a parent,” Smith told Hart, Metro reports. “Karate Kid came out in June and ‘Whip My Hair’ came out in October. I’m building this dream of a family I’ve had in my mind. I’m going to do it better than my father did it. We’ve talked about it, my father was abusive.” Smith seemed to imply that he was too hard on his family while trying to achieve the vision he had of a successful family. “‘No one wanted to be in a platoon,” he said. “Willow was the first one to begin the mutiny and it was my first realisation that success and money don’t mean happiness. “Up until that point, I really believed that you could succeed your way – to a house and a family – and you could win your way to happiness.” In a 2022 interview with The Independent, Willow Smith revealed that her parents struggled to understand her while she was growing up, due to their different upbringings. Meanwhile Jaden, 25, asked to become emancipated – where a child is removed from the control of their parents or legal guardians – from his parents when he was a minor, aged 15. His request came after he starred opposite his father in the box-office disaster, After Earth, which was also panned by critics. In his 2021 memoir, Smith recalled the moment his “heart shattered” when Jaden asked to become emancipated. “And what was worse was that Jaden took the hit,” the Independence Day star wrote, adding: “Jaden had faithfully done everything that I’d instructed him to do, and I had coached him into the worst public mauling he’d ever experienced.” Jaden ultimately decided against pursuing emancipation, but moved out of his family home that year. Will Smith is currently shooting a Bad Boys sequel with Martin Lawrence, with whom he has co-starred in three previous Bad Boys films, including the 1999 original. Mandy Moore opens up about her two-year-old son’s Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome diagnosis
Mandy Moore has opened up about her two-year-old son Gus’s diagnosis with Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome, a rare skin condition that develops during childhood. The 39-year-old actress detailed her son’s condition in a series of posts on her Instagram Story. She explained how Gus, who she shares with her husband Taylor Goldsmith, woke up with an unidentifiable rash on 29 July. According to Moore, Several doctors were unsure of what exactly the rash was but ultimately ended with a diagnosis of Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome. “This sweet boy woke up with a crazy rash on Saturday am,” Moore wrote over a photo of Gus holding a lollipop inside what looked like a doctor’s office. “We thought maybe an eczema flare? Poison oak? Allergy. We tried to deduce what it could be and did anything to help him find relief from the itch.” She continued: “Went to urgent care. Paediatrician. Dermatologist. Paediatric dermatologist. All the while, he smiles and carries on like the rockstar that he is.” The following photo displayed a close-up of Gus’s legs and feet covered in raised red patches. “Turns out it’s a viral childhood rash that just spontaneously appears called Gianotti-Crosti syndrome. It’s all over his legs and feet (ouch) and the backs of his arms but nowhere else,” the This Is Us star wrote. “There’s nothing to do but a steroid cream and Benadryl at night. And it could last six to eight weeks. Ooooof. Anyone ever experience this?” Moore added a final slide of Gus from a different day and admitted to the struggle she’s endured as a parent. “All of that to say, this parenting thing is weird and hard and sometimes you feel so helpless (and yes I’m ever so grateful it’s only an itchy skin condition). Kids are resilient and as long as he’s smiling through it, we are a-okay,” the creator noted. According to WebMD, the rash can also be referred to as “papular acrodermatitis of childhood,” and affects the legs, arms, and face. Viral illnesses can bring about this rare condition and can appear while “your child is recovering from another illness”. Children between the ages of nine months to nine years old are more likely to develop the rash. However, it’s not impossible for adults to get it. “The rash often first appears on or near the buttocks, then spreads to the arms, legs, and face. The blisters vary in size and may be filled with fluid. They may be pink, red, or brown in color,” WebMD said. Swollen lymph nodes and a mild fever are symptoms of the skin condition too. Although the rash may take anywhere between four to eight weeks to heal on its own, little to no scarring should be left on the skin. In 2021, Moore gave birth to Gus, short for “August,” before having her second baby, Oscar ‘Ozzie’ Bennett. The Tangled Ever After voice spoke about the gratification she and Goldsmith felt at the end of each day in her 31 May post. “These dudes rule my heart. Each night, Taylor and I fall into bed after we’ve put them down; after we’ve straightened up from the chaos of dinner/bath and set up for the next morning and we chat about the day,” the actor proclaimed. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. I mean, I do look forward to feeling moderately well rested sometime in the next decade? But [shrug emoji].” The photo showed Gus and Ozzie staring at each other on a picnic blanket at the park. Paris Hilton announces surprise birth and name of second child
Paris Hilton has surprised the world with the announcement of her second child. The American socialite, 42, took to Instagram on Thanksgiving (23 November) to share the arrival of her second baby with husband Carter Reum - a baby girl. She revealed the news by posting a photo of a pink pajama set with the name “London” inscribed on the Peter Pan collared top. “Thankful for my baby girl,” the DJ captioned the post. She placed a pair of hot pink heart-shaped sunglasses and a brown, knitted toy bunny alongside the cosy PJ’s. Fellow celebrities and fans rushed to congratulate the mother of two on the arrival of her daughter. Supermodel Naomi Campbell commented under the Instagram post: “Congratulations @parishilton & welcome Londom [sic].” “Omggg! Congratulations you guys! This is so amazing!” commented fashion designer Kimora Lee Simmons. “Can’t wait to meet London!” Singer Demi Lovato wrote: “Omg congratulations!!!” Meanwhile, Hilton’s aunt and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Kyle Richards, left a series of pink heart emojis in the comments section. In addition to baby London, Hilton and Reum are already parents to their 10-month-old son, Phoenix Barron. The couple - who were married in November 2021 - welcomed their first child via surrogate in January. The heiress also celebrated the birth of her second child on TikTok, where she shared videos of her family’s sweet reaction to the new arrival. In one TikTok video posted on Thanksgiving, Hilton can be heard asking her niece and nephew: “You guys excited for your new cousin?” In response, her nephew asked: “You have two babies?” “I have two babies,” she replied. @parishilton Priceless moments? Family is everything? ♬ original sound - ParisHilton In another TikTok video, Hilton and Reum can be seen celebrating Phoenix becoming a big brother. “Big brother! Big brother!” the couple chanted as Hilton held up Phoenix, who was wearing a grey onesie and white knitted turkey-themed beanie. “OMG ANOTHER BABY!!!! A GIRL SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!” one fan commented on TikTok, to which Hilton wrote back: “My princess has arrived!!” The surprise birth of Hilton’s daughter may not come as a surprise at all, considering the influencer waited until her son Phoenix was born to announce his arrival on Instagram. “You are already loved beyond words,” she captioned the post on 24 January, which showed her holding her son’s tiny hand. Just one month after welcoming her newborn son, the DJ revealed that her family didn’t know their surrogate gave birth until Phoenix was one week old. “Not even my mom, my sisters, my best friend knew until he was over a week old,” Hilton explained on her iHeartRadio podcast, This Is Paris. “It was really nice to have that with Carter, be our own journey together. I just feel like my life has been so public, and I’ve never really had anything be just mine.” Read More Paris Hilton’s husband reveals why she wanted to keep their son’s birth secret Paris Hilton makes grand entrance into F1 party but ‘no one’ is there to watch Jennifer Aniston revealed her wellness secret on Instagram.
