It’s that time of year again, when we settle down in front of the telly to watch the glorious pop parade that is the Eurovision Song Contest. Liverpool will be the setting for the grand final on May 13, taking on hosting duties as last year’s winner, Ukraine, isn’t able to. Of course, the music is what matters when it comes to picking a winner, but let’s be honest, who doesn’t love checking out the performers’ weird and wonderful fashion choices? These are just some of the most epic on-stage outfits in Eurovision history… 1. ABBA ABBA was victorious at the 1974 contest with Waterloo, taking to the stage in glitzy satin and suede ensembles. Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus completed their look with knee-high silver platform boots. 2. Co-Co Representing Britain in 1978, six-piece pop group Co-Co chose super shimmery clown-inspired, rainbow coloured costumes. 3. Buck’s Fizz Previously a member of Co-Co, Cheryl Baker returned to Eurovision in 1981 with Buck’s Fizz, taking home the winner’s trophy for Making Your Mind Up. The memorable performance saw singers Bobby G and Mike Nolan whipping off the knee-length skirts of Baker and Jay Aston to reveal mini skirts underneath. 4. Youddiph We’re not sure if she was a bit chilly on stage, but Russian contestant Youddiph pulled her flowing red dress over her head like a shawl while performing in the 1994 final in Dublin. 5. Dana International Opting for the bird of paradise look, 1998’s winner Dana International teamed a plain black gown with a fabulous feathered jacket. 6. Lordi Long-time fans of Eurovision have learned to expect the unexpected. Finnish heavy metal band won in 2006 with Hard Rock Hallelujah, while kitted out in what looked like Halloween monster costumes. 7. Scooch Pop quartet Scooch was ‘Flying The Flag’ for the UK in 2007 with these Britney-esque cabin crew costumes. Sadly, they crash landed at the final in Helsinki, coming joint 22nd out of 24 finalists. 8. Verka Serduchka Also in 2007, Ukrainian drag singer Verka Serduchka fared significantly better than Scooch, coming in second place with a bonkers but brilliant military-themed performance. The singer donned a silver snakeskin trench coat with a matching star-topped hat and glitterball tie. 9. Conchita Wurst Austrian winner Conchita Wurst continued Eurovision’s drag tradition in 2014, accessorising her glittering golden gown with glossy hair and a perfectly groomed beard. 10. Kate Miller-Heidke Australia has, somewhat confusingly been allowed to participate in Eurovision since 2015. The nation may not technically be part of Europe, but it sure knows what’s required of a contestant on the fashion front. In 2019, Kate Miller-Heidke was dolled up in a voluminous fairy princess dress and crown, the singer performing Zero Gravity while being flung from side to side on a long, bendy pole. 11. Sheldon Riley Also representing Australia, Sheldon Riley gave us one of 2022’s most dramatic outfits. Dressed in all white, Riley wore a gown with a long feathered train, paired with a tuxedo-style cropped jacket and a crystal mask covering his face. Autumn brings a cornucopia of colour to farmers’ markets, writes Gurdeep Loyal in the latest instalment of our guide to shopping at Borough Market. From red Russet apples and wild mushrooms and game birds, to butternut, acorn, pumpkin and delicata squashes; from turbot, king of the flatfish, to fresh clams; from freshly excavated beetroot to custard-coloured quinces to the purple of ripe autumn figs… there’s many a sight to behold. The recipes below are from Brindisa, a Spanish food stall that is celebrating its 25th anniversary at the market this year. From a clam and chickpea stew that’s perfect for cosy evenings to a hearty haricot beans with wild mushrooms, make the most of the season’s bounty with these delightful dinners. Clam and chickpea stew This recipe is from Monika Linton’s book Brindisa: A True Taste of Spain and has been adapted by Sophie Rushton-Smith. For the best taste and results with this recipe, Rushton-Smith recommends using the best quality shellfish you can find. Serves: 4 Prep time: 5 minutes | Cooking time: 20 minutes Ingredients: 800g of shellfish, for example, clams or cockles A jar of Brindisa sofrito sauce A jar of Navarrico chickpeas 200ml or half a bottle of Fumet fish stock ½ tsp of sugar 1 tbsp finely chopped parsely Method: 1. Prepare the shellfish you have chosen for the stew well, wash and discard any shells that have broken etc. 2. Heat the Sofrito sauce in a pan and add a jar of chickpeas. Heat together for 2 minutes, until the mixture comes to a simmer. 3. Add the fumet rojo, there should be enough liquid for the chickpeas to begin to float. Taste the liquid and add the sugar if the sofrito tastes a little too acidic. 4. Add the shellfish (clams, cockles etc), bring to a vigorous boil, and put the lid on the pan for 1-2 minutes, just long enough for the shellfish to cook and release their juices. 5. Take the pan from the heat, stir in the parsley, and add a twist of black pepper. 6. To serve, lift out the chickpeas and shellfish with a slotted spoon and put into small bowls, then cover them with a ladleful of the cooking liquid. Garnish with a sprinkling of parsley. Haricot beans with wild mushrooms Serves: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes | Cooking time: 10 minutes Ingredients: 1 jar Navarrico haricot butter beans 150g wild mushrooms Brindisa Arbequina olive oil 2 shallots 2 cloves garlic Parsley Method: 1. Drain the beans, dabbing with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. 2. Clean the mushrooms with a damp cloth and cut them into medium-sized pieces. Dice the shallots and slice the garlic. Chop the parsley. 3. Place a large frying pan on a medium heat with a little olive oil. Cook the mushrooms until they just start to colour. 4. Reduce the heat, add the shallots and garlic and cook for about 5 minutes to soften. It is crucial because of the subtlety of flavours that you do not burn or over-brown your garlic. 5. Add the beans and warm through. 6. To finish, salt to taste, add a glug of olive oil and sprinkle over with parsley. The theme for the 2024 Met Gala has finally been revealed. On Wednesday 8 November, Vogue announced that the upcoming theme for the annual fashion gala will be “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. The Met Gala, which is held each year on the first Monday in May, supports the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. According to Vogue, nearly 250 items will be drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection - some rarely seen in public - to span 400 years of fashion history. The exhibit will feature a variety of fashion, from 17th century Elizabethan style items to contemporary pieces from designers like Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney, and Connor Ives. Iconic haute couture creators - such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Givenchy - will also be present throughout the collection. Sienna Miller became the latest star to opt for a bold look that accentuated, rather than hid, her pregnancy bump at the lavish Vogue World event at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane, where the glitterati gathered to celebrate fashion’s best and brightest. Miller wore a romantic two-piece from Schiaparelli, with a couture crop top and puff-ball skirt both in a white silk material, paired with velvet peep-toe heels and sheer black tights.
