David Coulthard insists Formula 1 should revisit plans from a decade ago to race in New York. F1 currently had three races in the United States, with Las Vegas set to make its debut in November to join Austin and Miami. The sport had plans 10 years ago to race in Weehawken, New Jersey, on a street track overlooking the Hudson River, but the plan was foiled due to a contractual dispute. Yet former McLaren and Red Bull driver Coulthard – who drove a 2012 Red Bull show car around sections of the track in New York – believes a race in the Big Apple would be the “perfect place” for F1 to find the sweet spot stateside. “We tried to get a race in New York several years ago at Weehawken,” Coulthard told Autosport. “I remember running in one of the Red Bull show cars. I drove part of the section of track n the F1 car and it was unbelievable. “Opposite Manhattan, there was a section that made Eau Rouge at Spa look like kids’ stuff. If they ever were able to reignite that plan right there, I think that would be the perfect place.” Coulthard, a 13-time grand prix winner who is now a pundit for Channel 4’s F1 coverage, added that each event would have its “own flavour”, given the different cities each race take place in. “I think we can go to four races in the future, when you consider the land mass,” he said. “And that’s the utopian dream – to break America. “They’ll all have their own flavour, they have to. State to state in America is very different, so race to race – each event has to reflect that. “Austin is what we’re used to – a proper track, so we turn up and go racing. Miami is a bit of a hybrid track and Vegas is a playground for adults. “Being in a city, rather than at a venue, the event will undoubtedly take over. And being a Saturday night race there’ll be a big buzz.” After last week’s second edition of the Miami Grand Prix, F1’s next American race will be in Austin at the Circuit of the Americas in October before Vegas a month later. Chioma Nnadi has been appointed the head of editorial content at British Vogue, succeeding outgoing editor-in-chief Edward Enninful. Enninful, 51, resigned from one of fashion’s most coveted jobs in June, triggering months of speculation over who would replace him. London-born journalist Nnadi becomes the first Black woman to be appointed editor-in-chief of the magazine, as Anna Wintour praised her as “an editor and writer with an impeccable reputation”. Announcing Nnadi’s appointment on Monday 18 September, Wintour said: “Chioma is beloved among her colleagues at Vogue, and is an editor and writer with an impeccable reputation – both here and in the fashion industry at large. “I’m so grateful to Edward Enninful for everything he’s accomplished at British Vogue, and we’re all looking forward to a productive and creative relationship with him in his new role. “I can’t think of a more worthy person to follow in his footsteps than Chioma, who has proven herself adept at speaking to our digital audience and has found ways to extend Vogue’s reach, authority, and influence across all of our platforms. “She is passionate about fashion, music and culture, and I couldn’t be happier that she will be leading our editorial and creative teams in London.” Nnadi said: “I’m beyond excited and honoured to have been appointed as British Vogue’s Head of Editorial Content. Max Verstappen will start Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix from a shock 11th place after Lance Stroll crashed out at 110mph and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz took pole position. On a wild night at the Marina Bay Circuit, both Red Bull drivers were eliminated in Q2 leaving the world champions facing an enormous task to retain their unbeaten record this season. George Russell qualified second, missing out on pole by just 0.072 seconds with Charles Leclerc third for Ferrari, one place ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris. Lewis Hamilton finished fifth, half-a-second back. Verstappen was eliminated in Q2 after he bemoaned the handling of the Red Bull machine which has carried him to a record 10 consecutive wins, but has struggled under the bulbs that light up this unique 3.07-mile high-downforce track. Verstappen missed out on Q3 by 0.007 sec, and then took aim at his team over the radio. “I don’t know if you saw that, but it was an absolutely shocking experience,” he said amid of flurry of expletives. Verstappen is also facing three stewards’ investigations for separate incidents of impeding during qualifying. His team-mate Sergio Perez, who spun, also failed to progress to Q3. He will start 13th following a miserable night for the team from Milton Keynes in the city-state. Red Bull’s demise allowed Sainz to capture his second consecutive pole with Russell narrowly missing out. Earlier, Stroll survived a staggering crash. The Canadian driver lost control of his Aston Martin through the final left-hander before he slammed into the barrier. The force of the high-speed impact sent Stroll’s head rocking from side-to-side. He catapulted back across the track with Norris forced to take evasive action – dodging a flying wheel and Stroll’s out-of-control machine. “Is the driver alright?” asked Norris on the radio. “That must have been quite a big one.” Stroll pirouetted to a standstill in the middle of the track before his race engineer Ben Michell came on the radio. “Lance, car is safe,” said Michell. “Are you OK?” Stroll, 24, replied: “Yeah, I am OK.” The Aston Martin driver emerged from his wrecked car unaided before being taken off to the medical centre. Aston Martin confirmed Stroll had been given the all-clear by the on-site medical team and was allowed to return to the paddock. Stroll’s accident brought a premature end to a frenetic conclusion to Q1 and left the marshals with a significant barrier repair job at the final corner, with fluid from his car also on the track.
