The simple white vest is an iconic style, and a favourite of men from Tony Soprano to Stanley Kowalski, Marlo Brando's character in A Street Named Desire – but its nickname has become somewhat dated. Now, Gen Z social media users have come up with a new term for the jarringly named “wife beater”, after a resurgence in popularity of the white tank top. People have started referring to the item as a “wife pleaser” to make it less triggering for victims of family and domestic violence. Tutorials on how to style the top have surged in popularity in recent times, while fashion magazines and websites have started listing them in articles like the “best wife pleasers of the summer”. In 2018, The New York Times ran an opinion piece titled: "Are we really still calling this shirt a wife beater?" “I myself have used the term before — and I’ve worn the shirt plenty — but this time it stopped me cold. Given the torrent of revelations of abuse against women in the #MeToo era, the name suddenly seemed grossly inappropriate,” wrote the author. He continued: "We don’t call our pants 'child molesters' or our hats 'cat mutilators'. We immediately recognise such descriptions as violent and abhorrent. And yet, we somehow overlook the same when we call our shirts wife beaters." The “wife pleaser”, by contrast, appears to have been in use since last year, and has now gone viral again. In July 2022, InStyle ran an article about American actor Chris Evans’ love of the item, called ‘Chris Evans’s "wife pleasers" are this summer's ultimate fashion throwback". Social media users on TikTok are also calling it the “wife respecter” and a “wife caresser”. And in 2018, Jonathan Van Ness, star of Netflix series Queer Eye, even called it a “wife lover”, when the cast were helping a subject choose an outfit on the show. The term wife beater, meanwhile, has far more sinister roots. It appears to have entered common use in 1947, when a man wearing a white tank top was arrested for murdering his wife. TV presenter Jasmine Harman became emotional as she opened up about her mother’s struggles with hoarding – and how it adversely impacted their relationship for years. The host of Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun, Harman, 47, said she “refused to bring people home” and was “really, really embarrassed and ashamed” about her mum Vasoulla’s condition, on Wednesday (25 October) during an appearance on This Morning. “In fact, when I started working in television, it was my biggest fear that someone would find out about the way I’d grown up and the way that we lived at the time,” she told Dermot O’Leary and Allison Hammond. Reflecting on how things had changed since then, Harman teared up as she affirmed her priority is “having a loving relationship” with Vasoulla – and not “focussing on the hoarding” anymore. Addressing her mother, Harman added: “She’s helped me to become a much more compassionate person. We used to fight, didn’t we? “But now we have a relationship that’s outside [of the hoarding].” Hoarding was recognised as a mental health disorder in 2013. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is characterised by “an accumulation of possessions due to excessive acquisition of, or difficulty discarding possessions, regardless of their actual value”. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) outlines detailed criteria that psychologists can use to diagnose hoarding, including cluttered living spaces where the room’s intended use [of cooking, sleeping, or sleeping] has become impossible. These behaviours usually appear during a person’s early life, with Vasoulla explaining it was triggered by “the trauma of loss” in her case. “We moved from Cyprus when I was about three so I left my baby things back home and started collecting trinkets in bombed-out houses that were still about in the early Sixties, after the war – trinkets that I treasured,” she explained. “Then we moved back to Cyprus for a couple of years and those things all got lost. Then we moved back to England and all my new ties got lost – so I just had lots of upheaval, lots of loss.” Vasoulla, whose father was killed in Cyprus, added: “It’s more the loss, like a bereavement. Losing your father is a big thing, moving country ...you lose everything and you get a new place to live. The trauma of loss [is] something that a lot of people have as the onset of their hoarding behaviour.” The mother-daughter duo previously opened up about how hoarding affected their lives in a 2011 BBC documentary, titled My Hoarder Mum & Me. Speaking about the “cathartic experience”, Harman on Wednesday confessed:“I genuinely had no idea how many people were affected by this.” Around three million people are reportedly impacted by the mental health condition, according to Hoarding Disorders UK. The organisation’s director Jo Cook, who joined Vasoulla and Harman on the This Morning couch, explained that hoarding is neither a lifestyle choice, nor “about poor housekeeping”. When asked about supporting loved ones who might struggle with hoarding, Cook recommended joining a support group and approaching the anxiety-based disorder with empathy. “It’s really important that that person that you’re helping, feels safe in their home with you. Because, essentially, you’re unpicking someone’s nest, so you need to make sure you’re doing it slowly and surely,” she added. James Blunt has claimed that he edited his Wikipedia page so it says he is younger than his real age. The pop singer, who is known for his tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, apparently tinkered with the online encyclopedia so it states he is two years younger than he actually is. “If you look at my Wikipedia page, it will say that I’m 47 – I’m actually 49,” Blunt told the Guardian. “That’s because I changed the entry.” At the time of writing, Blunt’s Wikipedia page stated that he is 49. In the same interview, Blunt looked back on the difficulties of balancing work and raising two children. He married Sofia Wellesley, the daughter of Lord and Lady John Henry Wellesley, in 2014. While speaking at the Oxford Union in 2016, Blunt confirmed that they’d welcomed a son, and have since had a second. In the interview with The Guardian, he spoke about how becoming a father had effected his priorities. “Being hands-on with my kids when I can is important,” he said, before going on to note times in his life when he wasn’t able to be as present. “I am away for long periods. With my second child, I left the day after the birth for nine months. Fatherhood changed my priorities. I was selfish. Now these little people are far more important than me.” Elsewhere in the interview, published on Saturday (19 August), the singer-songwriter spoke about his own experiences of having distance from his parents at a young age. Prior to attending Harrow School, a private school founded in the 16th century, Blunt attended Elstree School in Woolhampton, Berkshire. “I boarded at school from the age of seven,” he noted. “My parents dropped me off and walked away. On day three, I asked the matron, ‘When will I see Mum and Dad again?’ I was told Christmas. This was September. “I never really saw them again until I got famous.” Blunt was also close friends with the actor Carrie Fisher, whom he called his “American mother”. Fisher died in December 2016 of sleep apnoea but also had cocaine, morphine and ecstasy in her system at the time of her death. The singer called the Star Wars actor’s passing his “greatest sadness”, adding: “I was with her the day before she died. Knowing how it happened, I wish I’d been able to do something. Have an impact. “It’s taken me a long time to write a song about her. It’s on this album. It’s about what I wish I could’ve said to her when she was alive.
