Charles Leclerc lights up Las Vegas to claim pole position for Ferrari
Charles Leclerc danced his way to pole position with an emphatic performance for Ferrari under the Las Vegas lights. At just after 1am local time – the latest conclusion to a qualifying session in Formula One history – Leclerc finished just 0.044 seconds clear of team-mate Carlos Sainz. However, Sainz will start down in 12th after a loose drain cover destroyed his Ferrari in practice and triggered a 10-place grid penalty. Triple world champion Max Verstappen, a winner in 17 of the 20 rounds so far, took third spot for Red Bull, but will move up to second following Sainz’s demotion. Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in Q2, leaving him only 10th on the grid. Hamilton finished half-a-second behind team-mate George Russell, who hauled his Mercedes into Q3 before taking advantage of Sainz’s penalty to secure third on the grid for Saturday’s 50-lap race. Following the shambolic start to F1’s Sin City comeback here on Thursday night, qualifying passed off without significant incident – much to the relief of the sport’s under-fire bosses. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stopped short of issuing an apology to the furious spectators, who saw just eight minutes of practice before they were ejected from the stands. However, in the early hours of Saturday morning, the estimated 90,000 fans who filled the 3.8-mile street venue – 30,000 down on capacity – were treated to an uninterrupted session which saw Leclerc romp to top spot in his scarlet machine. “I am happy,” said Leclerc. “To have first place in Las Vegas is great. “I was a bit disappointed because my lap was not great but it was all we needed. In the race we usually lack pace but hopefully we can put it all together in the race.” Against the backdrop of Caesars Palace, the MGM Grand and Bellagio hotels, Ferrari delivered, but it was another underwhelming showing for Hamilton. A fortnight after the seven-time world champion finished eighth in Brazil – 63 seconds behind winner Verstappen – he struggled for pace in his underperforming Mercedes. “Couldn’t go faster, mate,” said Hamilton following his elimination. Behind Hamilton, Sergio Perez qualified one place back. Lando Norris arrived in Nevada as the grid’s in-form driver after scoring more points across the last three rounds than anyone else. But the British driver failed to make it out of Q2 with his McLaren machinery not suited to the three long straights here coupled with slow corners. He qualified only 16th, three places ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri who also fell at the first hurdle. “Very disappointed,” said McLaren CEO Zak Brown. “We thought we’d struggle this weekend but I didn’t think either car would be out in Q1. “Not a good start to the weekend and now all we can do is focus on the race tomorrow.” Read More Toto Wolff fuelled by ‘personal anger’ to help Lewis Hamilton win eighth title On this day in 2010: Sebastian Vettel becomes youngest ever F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton ‘counting down days’ to end of season after another poor race Max Verstappen thwarts Lando Norris’ bid for first F1 win with sprint victory F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix LIVE: Qualifying times and results in Sin City Verstappen calls Ocon a ‘stupid idiot’ in F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix qualifying tussle

The 'mutant pigeon' is actually real and people can't believe it
The 'mutant pigeon' is actually real and people can't believe it
Pigeons aren’t known for sparking social media frenzies, probably because most of us view them as annoying, flying rats. But one TikTok channel dedicated to the pavement-lurking birds has prompted a flutter of interest after it shared a pretty jaw-dropping video. The clip, which is accompanied by suitably jaunty music, shows a staggeringly proportioned pigeon, with a fit-to-busting chest, skinny white legs and giant feathers for claws, apparently. The man behind Pigeons TV posted the footage early last month and it has since racked up more than 18.6 million views and 1.6 million likes. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Stunned commentators have pointed out that it looks like some sort of chicken/pigeon hybrid, with a number suggesting the “mutant” bird must be a hoax. @pigeonstv English Pouter pigeons #pigeonstv #pigeon “What in the A.I. generated pigeon is that?” one asked. “Y’'all better not [be] gaslight me into thinking this is real,” wrote another. “If I were 5 years old and you told me to draw a picture of a bird, this is what it would look like,” joked a third. “Bro came out [of] a Dr Suess Book,” added a fourth. And a fifth said: “I don’t know much about birds but these are obviously two birds wearing a pigeon suit.” However, it turns out they’re all wrong. And this Frankenstein’s Monster of a feathered friend is simply an example of one of the many varieties of pigeons that exist in the world. The English Pouter is believed to have originated in England more than 400 years ago as the result of cross-breeding among a number of other old pigeon types. It’s best known for its bulbous breast, which it can puff up and hold in position for hours on end, according to the AviCulture blog. Indeed, the bird is so famed for its interesting looks that Charles Darwin himself commented on its appearance in his 1868 book ‘The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication’, branding it: “Perhaps the most distinct of all domesticated pigeons”. The Poulter’s full chest also apparently influenced fashion back in the early 20th Century, inspiring a “poulter pigeon’ dress”, which puffed above the waist. Sarah Jessica Parker wears mismatched shoes to New York City Ballet Gala
Sarah Jessica Parker wears mismatched shoes to New York City Ballet Gala
Sarah Jessica Parker channelled her inner Carrie Bradshaw when she showed up to the New York City Ballet Gala wearing two completely different shoes. On Thursday 5 October, the 58-year-old actress attended the event with jer husband and fellow actor, 61, Matthew Brodrick. She was seen wearing an off-the-shoulder dress from Carolina Herrera, as well as the sold-out Dish sandals from her own SJP collection, which are meant to be worn mismatched and retail for $450. Although both shoes feature the same diamond circle buckle, they were two different colours, with one matching the black in her dress and the other being a light purple colour. Parker completed her look with a large black bow in her hair as she accessorised with a silver purse, vintage Fred Leighton diamond rings, Kwiat Diamonds studs, and a Vacheron Constantin watch. The shoes appear to be an homage to the character Parker plays in both Sex and the City and its reboot And Just Like That Carrie Bradshaw, who wore a metallic red Christian Louboutin sandal on her right foot and a teal colour on the other in season three, episode 13 of the hit series. Her husband made sure to match, as Brodrick wore a black tuxedo that consisted of a black jacket with matching pants and shoes. He also wore a white shirt and black bowtie. Before heading to the gala, Parker showed off her outfit on her Instagram page. “Everything was beautiful at the ballet X, SJ,” she captioned the photo. Many fans took to the comments section on her post to applaud how much they loved the outfit. “The bow. The dress. The chorus line reference,” one comment read. Another commenter agreed, writing: “LOVE THE BOW IN YOUR HAIR.” “Your style is unequivocal. You are a risk taker, thank you,” a third commenter added. This isn’t the first time Parker has sparked fashion inspiration in her fans. Recently, her 2014 custom Oscar de la Renta gown worn at the 2014 Met Gala was up for auction. The dress, made custom for the Sex and the City star, features a black velvet bodice with a v-neckline and petal-like pattern at the bottom. The gown’s ivory skirt also includes a trellis embroidery, complete with Oscar de la Renta’s signature at the train. “When Sarah Jessica came to the office for our first design meeting, she had a binder full of references to share with Oscar. It was a truly special collaboration,” said co-creative director Fernando Garcia in a statement. “And for me, who didn’t ever go to design school, it was the biggest fashion lesson I could have gotten - on the floor of Oscar’s office.” The commissioned piece took 224 hours to make. Nine years later, it was returned to the atelier where it was made to be restored to its original condition. Thirty per cent of proceeds from the sale of the dress will benefit the Jefferson Market at the New York Public Library. In 2014, the And Just Like That star recounted the gown’s design process in an interview with Vanity Fair. “I said to Mr de la Renta, please let me use scarlet embroidery thread, and splash your name across the back. It was my idea. He would never in a million years have it done, he’s far too modest,” Parker said at the time.
