F1 boss hints at measures to slow Max Verstappen and Red Bull in 2024
F1 boss hints at measures to slow Max Verstappen and Red Bull in 2024
Formula 1’s chief executive has hinted that the organisation may have to consider ways of limiting Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s dominance next season. Verstappen secured a record 17th win of the 2023 campaign at the Brazilian Grand Prix and has long since sewn up a third consecutive world title. The Dutchman has dominated the sport since pipping Lewis Hamilton to the 2021 Drivers’ Championship. While dominance by a single driver or team is far from new, with Hamilton himself securing six titles in seven years between 2014 and 2020, the scale of Verstappen’s superiority has been striking. And while stressing that F1 could not be seen to be targeting the 26-year-old, Stefano Domenicali has hinted that measures may have to be put in place to allow other constructors to mount a more serious challenge. “I think if you look back at the dominance of a driver or a team, it’s always been a part of F1,” Domenicali said to Channel 4. “We need to consider one thing that for sure Max Verstappen has done and is doing an incredible job. We need to recognise that. “But if you see [the gaps in qualifying], it’s just incredible. If you look at the numbers of overtaking we are having the last two seasons, we are at the top of the scale. “We cannot be seen as a sport that is trying to do something against someone, that would be wrong. “On the other hand, the nature of Formula 1 is to make sure that next year the teams can give to the other drivers - that are very, very strong - the possibility to compete in that field.” Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship standings by a remarkable 266 points from teammate Sergio Perez. Only Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz at the Singapore Grand Prix has been able to break Red Bull’s monopoly on race wins this year. There are just two more races to come before the conclusion of the campaign, with a first trip to Las Vegas followed by the denouement at Abu Dhabi, where Verstappen secured a controversial first crown two years ago. Hamilton, who fell short on that occasion, raised eyebrows after racing concluded at Interlagos on Sunday when suggesting that Red Bull were so far ahead that other teams would find it too hard to close the gap for the next couple of years. “The Red Bull, I think, is so far away,” the British driver said. “I think they’re probably going to be very clear for the next couple of years. The next truly significant change to the sport is set to come in 2026 when new engine regulations will take effect. It is hoped that this will help level the playing field and attract new engine manufacturers to the sport, with a number already having expressed interest.

Ohio Republicans approve August election that could thwart abortion-rights push in state
Ohio voters will decide this summer whether to make it more difficult to change the state's constitution -- only months before a potential ballot measure in November over whether to guarantee abortion rights in the state. Ohio's Republican-controlled legislature this week approved a resolution that will ask voters in August to increase the threshold needed to change the constitution from a simple majority to 60%.

South Carolina judge halts six-week abortion ban as state Supreme Court set to review new law
South Carolina judge halts six-week abortion ban as state Supreme Court set to review new law
The day after the state’s Republican governor signed the ban into law, a judge in South Carolina has blocked a measure outlawing abortion at roughly six weeks of pregnancy. Abortion rights advocates and civil rights groups filed a lawsuit moments after Governor Henry McMaster announced his signature on the bill. South Carolina’s latest law – which could extend the sweeping restrictions and outright bans on abortion care across the entire US South, and threaten legal access to care for millions of Americans – is nearly identical to a bill that was blocked by the state Supreme Court last year. The decision on Friday means the state’s abortion regulations revert to previous rules that allow for abortion care up until about 20 weeks after after fertilization. “The status quo should be maintained until the Supreme Court reviews its decision,” Judge Clifton Newman said. “It’s going to end up there.” His decision on 26 May comes just four months after the state’s Supreme Court permanently struck down a similar measure, which the court determined ran afoul of the state’s constitution. Restrictions on abortion care “must be reasonable and it must be meaningful in that the time frames imposed must afford a woman sufficient time to determine she is pregnant and to take reasonable steps to terminate that pregnancy,” Justice Kaye Hearn wrote in the majority opinion on 5 January. More than a dozen states, mostly in the South, have outlawed most abortions or severely restricted access within the year after the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which revoked a constitutional right to abortion care that was affirmed by the decision in Roe v Wade for nearly half a century. South Carolina remains the only state south of Virginia without severe restrictions or outright bans on abortion care past the 12th week of pregnancy. Most of those states have moved to ban abortion in nearly all cases with limited or no exceptions. Last year, lawmakers in South Carolina failed to adopt an anti-abortion law that would ban nearly all abortions in the state, but a six-week ban took effect shortly after the Supreme Court’s ruling on 24 June. In a statement following the governor’s signature on the latest six-week ban, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre lambasted Republican lawmakers who are “dismantling women’s rights across the South, putting their health and lives in jeopardy. “ South Carolina’s ban will cut off access to abortion for women in the state and those across the entire region for whom South Carolina is their closest option for care,” she added. I Got “Vanilla Chrome” Nails, Summer’s Big Manicure Trend
I love white clothes. My closet is so packed with white button downs, dresses, and linen skirts that I’m starting to worry I won’t have enough non-white options to wear on a friend’s upcoming bachelorette trip. My nails, however, are a different story. Most white nail polishes make me think of Wite-Out or glow-in-the-dark paint — not exactly in line with the clean aesthetic my mostly white wardrobe evokes.
