BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: Melanie Griffith wore her scars like a warrior as she was seen leaving a spa in Beverly Hills on Thursday, May 12. The actress donned a stylish look with an espresso brown leather motorcycle jacket along with a beige sweater and a pair of white slacks. She also added beige Gucci sneakers and sunglasses to complete her attire.

Besides these, Griffith was also seen sporting marks on her face and hand as she exited the Melanie Grant skincare salon, the Daily Mail reported. The ‘Lolita’ star is reportedly battling skin cancer and the swelling on her face is the result of dermabrasion, a skin-resurfacing procedure that uses a rapidly rotating device to sand the outer layers of skin, as per Mayo Clinic.

‘Be CAREFUL. Use sunscreen’

The Hollywood icon spoke about the procedure a few years ago as well on her Instagram page, where she explained, “Bandaged again after having dermabrasion, the final step to fix the now removed basil cell skin cancer. If any of you have it, get it fixed. If you lay in the sun, are exposed to lots of sun, be CAREFUL. Use sunscreen.”

She added at the time, “Get checked out by your dermatologist. If you don’t have one, get one, or go to your nearest clinic and ask to be tested for it. More info to come! 💋” attracting lots of support online. A user commented, “You posted this ages ago, but it touched me then …now I am going through the same thing mohs surgeries, now dermabrasion, thanks for sharing your story. It helps knowing others successfully and gracefully has gone through it. ❤️”

Another one said, “Oh honey!! You are a brave Warrior!! Thank you for sharing this!! Had no idea! Will only share your kind advice, not your name. Too personal. Praying for you!! Love ya Melanie!!!!!💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕” “Beautiful as always! Fast recovery friend,’ the third one added.

‘These types of surgery are not as common’

Though many believe that people go through dermabrasion for beauty purposes, it is more than that. As per Northwestern Medicine, “Laser therapy uses a narrow beam of intense light to remove cancer cells. Dermabrasion removes the top layer of skin with a rotating wheel or small particles that rub away skin cells. These types of surgery are not as common, as they don’t produce a tissue sample for a pathologist to check if all the cancer cells were removed.”

Mayo Clinic also asserts that as it says, “Dermabrasion can be used to treat or remove potentially precancerous skin patches.” “During dermabrasion, your doctor numbs your skin with anesthetics. You might also have the option of taking a sedative or receiving general anesthesia, depending on the extent of your treatment. Skin treated with dermabrasion will be sensitive and blotchy for several weeks. It might take about three months for your skin tone to return to normal,” the website adds.
