Tami Manis: Tennessee woman earns world record for longest mullet after not cutting hair for 33 years

KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE: Tami Manis, a 58-year-old woman from Tennessee, has reportedly set a world record for sporting the longest mullet, a distinctive hairstyle characterized by its short front and long back.

Manis' extraordinary auburn mullet measures an astonishing 5ft 8 inches(172.72cm) in length, nearly equivalent to the height of an average man.

Who has the longest mullet in the world?

The mullet hairstyle, often humorously referred to as "business in the front and a party in the back," gained popularity in the '80s and early '90s.

Notable figures such as Patrick Swayze, Billy Ray Cyrus and Mario Lopez made the hairstyle popular.

Manis, a public health nurse from Knoxville, Tennessee, has proudly maintained her mullet since adopting it in the '80s, and she has not had a haircut in 33 years, per the BBC.

Her inspiration for this iconic hairstyle came from the music video of 'Voices Carry' by the rock band 'Til Tuesday.

In the video, the lead singer, Aimee Mann, sports a distinctive platinum blonde spiky hairstyle that caught Manis' fancy.

"The girl had a rattail and I really wanted one of those," Manis told the Guinness World of Records.

Tami Manis secures place in Guinness World Records

In recognition of her exceptional mullet, Manis will be featured in the 2024 Guinness World Records book, solidifying her unique place in hairstyling history.

Manis' commitment to her mullet hairstyle has not gone unnoticed in the competitive world of mullet enthusiasts.

In 2022, she secured second place in the 2022 US Mullet competition, further establishing her status as a mullet icon.

When asked about the secret to maintaining her long locks, Manis attributes it to "good genes."

"I also do a conditioner which has Argan oil in it," Manis said. To manage her hair, she usually wears it in a braid.

Manis said that many people she encountered were unaware of the true length of her hair until she turns around. This element of surprise adds a fun and unique dimension to her distinctive appearance.
