Former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve married his partner in the Las Vegas Grand Prix paddock on Thursday night (16 November). A wedding chapel was set up so anybody tempted to tie the knot in Sin City could “Race to the Altar” - and Villeneuve took full advantage. His partner Giulia wore a stunning dress for the occasion and the happy couple were then seen posing for photos. Villeneuve’s former Williams engineer, Jock Clear, was best man as the 1997 world champion became the first - and likely last - F1 driver to get married on the track. F1’s Las Vegas Grand Prix began in disastrous fashion as the first practice session on Thursday night (16 November) was abandoned due to a loose manhole cover. The session had only been going for eight minutes when Carlos Sainz’s car rolled to a stop on the Sin City strip, having suffered substantial floor damage. Onboard footage shows the moment his Ferrari, driving at speeds of over 200mph, went over the loose drain cover. Sainz veered to the side and stopped the car after the impact. A red flag was thrown and soon after, stewards announced the session would not resume. The Las Vegas Sphere was seen wearing a Formula 1 helmet ahead of this weekend’s grand prix. A highly anticipated race will take place on the world-famous strip on Saturday night (18 November) and ahead of Thursday’s first practice session, Sin City’s newest landmark was lit up accordingly. A giant yellow emoji face was seen sporting an F1 helmet, making for a rather amusing view close to the circuit. The Sphere will also be used throughout race weekend to show driver introductions, live positions and fans around the track. An impressive Formula 1 drone show lit up the Las Vegas sky on Wednesday night (15 November), ahead of this weekend’s grand prix. Spinning F1 cars were projected into the air in an impressive display which also featured the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. This weekend’s grand prix will see drivers race through some of Sin City’s most famous streets, including down the strip. Despite the excitement, F1 champion Max Verstappen has criticised the nature of the Las Vegas GP, describing it as “99 per cent show, 1 per cent sporting event”.

While taking his turn to show off the trophy with his partner, pro golfer Justin Thomas, Sainz dropped the trophy on the floor. Clutching a bottle of champagne in his other hand, Sainz was chatting on stage when the cup slipped out of his grip. He stood with his hands on his head after the incident, which drew gasps from the crowd. F1 driver Esteban Ocon has revealed he was “throwing up” during the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday 8 October. Humidity, 40C temperatures and high-speed corners made the race incredibly tough for the drivers, with Lando Norris also calling the conditions “too dangerous”. After finishing seventh in the race for Alpine, Ocon explained that he was sick over the course of two laps - something that has “never happened” in the past. “I was throwing up by lap 15, 16. For two laps I think,” Ocon told Sky Sports. “I was doing that and thinking ‘s***, it’s going to be a long one’. A two-year-old square-lipped male rhinoceros born at a zoo in the Netherlands departed for his new home in Lithuania on Tuesday (26 September). Royal Burgers’ Zoo, in the Dutch city of Arnhem, contributes to the European population management program of breeding the square-lipped rhinos within the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. On the day of his big move, the young animal was sedated by vets before making his way into a “transport box” specially made for the journey. The square-lipped rhinoceros is considered critically endangered and possibly extinct in the wild. A group of five currently live on the vast East African savannah of Burgers’ Safari. Jessica Hawkins has become the first woman in almost five years to test a Formula 1 car, completing 26 laps of the Hungaroring in Budapest for Aston Martin last Thursday. The former W Series racer, 28, alternated in the AMR21 car with test and reserve driver Felipe Drugovich. Hawkins, a former British Karting Champion, joined the Aston Martin F1 Team in 2021 as Driver Ambassador and her role within the team has since expanded. Before Hawkins, the most recent woman to test an F1 car was Colombia’s Tatiana Calderon with Sauber - now Alfa Romeo - at the Hermanos Rodriguez track in Mexico City in October 2018.

A months-old lion cub was taken to a zoo in northern Serbia on Thursday (21 September) after it was found wandering on a local road. The female cub was found on the outskirts of Subotica, a town near the border with Hungary, malnourished and weak. Local media said that a Subotica resident spotted the cub on the road and called the police, who then took it to the zoo. Reports also said that the cub was friendly and wasn’t afraid of people. A police officer and local residents could be seen in other videos and photos caressing the cub.
