Carlos Sainz addresses Monaco Grand Prix concerns after ‘football injury’
Carlos Sainz addresses Monaco Grand Prix concerns after ‘football injury’
Carlos Sainz has clarified that he is “completely well and ready to race” at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix after rumours he had suffered an injury. Reports this week suggested that the Ferrari driver had hurt himself playing in the annual Monaco charity football match. The Spaniard appeared to have significant strapping on his thigh after being substituted. But Sainz has stressed on social media that he will good to go as the race weekend starts with the opening two practice sessions on Friday. “Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you know that I am well and completely ready to race this weekend in Monaco,” Sainz said. “What happened yesterday was simply a contact during the traditional charity football match, but it was not an injury. “I enjoyed playing football as I always do and now I am really looking forward to the weekend.” Sainz is currently fifth in the Drivers’ Championship standings, two places and ten points ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, though without a podium finish so far this season. He has a good recent record in Monaco, finishing second in each of the last two years, and will hope for an improved performance from his Ferrari on Sunday. Both Sainz and Leclerc have been battling significant inconsistency so far this campaign despite encouraging showings in qualifying. “[We need to] keep trying things,” Sainz said after a fifth placed finish at the Miami Grand Prix. “We are trying every weekend, changing the car every weekend. We just need to find out why are we on the fight for pole position on Saturdays and one second off on Sundays. “We just need to keep digging, keep understanding because it’s going to give us a better understanding for the rest of the year.” Read More Bernie Ecclestone would be surprised if Lewis Hamilton wanted to leave Mercedes F1 chief hails ‘exciting’ development with Honda set for grid return Lewis Hamilton ‘receives multi-million pound offer’ to make major change F1 2023 calendar: Every race this season Bernie Ecclestone would be surprised if Lewis Hamilton wanted to leave Mercedes F1 chief hails ‘exciting’ development with Honda set for grid return

Bernie Ecclestone would be surprised if Lewis Hamilton wanted to leave Mercedes
Bernie Ecclestone would be surprised if Lewis Hamilton wanted to leave Mercedes
Bernie Ecclestone has said he would be surprised if Ferrari pulled off the biggest transfer in recent Formula One memory by signing Lewis Hamilton – and believes it is Mercedes or bust for the British driver. Hamilton’s future in the sport remains under scrutiny with six months to run on his current £40million-a-year deal at Mercedes. Both Hamilton, 38, and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff have said they expect a new deal will be agreed. The Daily Mail this week reported that Ferrari are preparing a blockbuster bid for Hamilton – which could involve a swap deal with Charles Leclerc – while La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed Hamilton has already received an offer from the Italian team. Speaking to the PA news agency, F1’s former supremo Ecclestone, who remains well connected in the sport, said: “I would be surprised that Ferrari would want to get rid of Leclerc to sign Lewis because they are very much in love with Leclerc. “Lewis has said that when he does decide to stop he would still want to be connected with Mercedes so it would surprise me if he wanted to leave. “And if I was Lewis and I saw that Leclerc is happy to leave Ferrari, I would think there has to be a problem there. “I also don’t know why Lewis would think he would be better off at Ferrari than where he is at the moment. He knows everything well and truly at Mercedes. They know him, and they have a lot of respect for him so he couldn’t be better looked after anywhere. “Ferrari is not a retirement home either. They want to win the world championship more than anyone. So personally, I think he will stay as Mercedes, or he will retire.” Hamilton is gearing up for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix and is set to address his future in the Principality on Thursday. The seven-time world champion qualified 13th at the last race in Miami before driving well to finish sixth, but he is already 63 points behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the championship standings. “I don’t know what has happened to Mercedes and how they have suddenly got in the state that they find themselves in the moment,” added Ecclestone, 92. “I can understand Lewis being frustrated because he has been there for all that time and done well for Mercedes and for himself. But his contract is a lot of money to walk away from and that is a big problem. “The only place Lewis can go to to win that eighth world championship is Red Bull, but for sure there is no room there. It is impossible. There is no chance.” Hamilton’s Mercedes team will bring a major upgrade to the sixth round of the season in Monaco, but Wolff has already warned his superstar driver that his new machinery will not haul him into championship contention. “It won’t be a silver bullet because from my experience, they do not exist in our sport,” Wolff said. “We hope that it gives the drivers a more stable and predictable platform. Then we can build on that in the weeks and months ahead. “F1 is tough competition and a meritocracy. We are not where we want to be but there’s no sense of entitlement. It’s just about hard work to get us to the front.”

Dua Lipa reveals how she bonded with designer Donatella Versace
Dua Lipa reveals how she bonded with designer Donatella Versace
Dua Lipa said she “bonded” with Donatella Versace over their “shared love of this time of year” as she revealed the clothing in their fashion collaboration. The chart-topping 27-year-old singer, who co-hosted the Met Gala this month, co-designed the La Vacanza women’s collection with Versace. The fashion house said this was the first time it had “opened up the design process to a collaborator in this way” as the designs debuted at a show in Cannes, France, on Tuesday. Lipa and the Italian fashion designer’s clothing includes evening gowns, bikinis and beachwear alongside accessories such as bags and boots in laminated metallic leather and jewellery featuring butterflies and ladybugs. Butterfly and ladybug prints previously featured in the Versace Spring-Summer 1995 collection. Lipa said: “Donatella and I bonded over our shared love of this time of year while making this collection. “Digging through the archives we discovered we were drawn to a lot of the same references which was such an inspiring and fulfilling process. “La Vacanza (or The Vacation in English) ranges from metallic miniskirts and sexy bikinis, to butterfly rings and printed pieces inspired by the Versace SS ’95 collection. “There’s always an occasion to wear Versace, and I know I’ll be spending my days (and nights!) in La Vacanza all summer long.” Versace said the collection “celebrates the very best” of the summer with “gorgeous colours, fun prints, and light silhouettes”. She added: “Dua loves fashion, I love music — we are the perfect duo. “We had such a good time designing this collection together. We felt like we were on vacation and that is exactly the spirit we want people to feel when they wear our clothes.” Versace’s brother Gianni opened the brand’s first boutique in 1978, and following his murder in 1997 Donatella took over the house’s reins. She also described Lipa, who had worked as a model before her record deal, on Instagram as both a “superdesigner” and “Versace supermodel” and said the singer’s “passion and vision” inspired her during the creative process. Versace added: “I love you more than you can imagine.” Born in London to Kosovan-Albanian parents, Lipa has had three UK number ones including New Rules, One Kiss with Calvin Harris and Cold Heart with Sir Elton John. She is also set to release the track Dance The Night on Friday to accompany Barbie’s film soundtrack. Lipa is also starring as a mermaid in the upcoming live-action film alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
